12+ YEARS SHIPPING SOFTWARE — SELECTED EXPERIENCE

Shortlisted — New Media Writing Prize Nominated — NYU Global Game Jam

Ciao! I’m Artemio.

I'm a software developer and artist. For over a decade I've built digital products — websites, apps, and interactive experiences — including core contributions at Automattic (WordPress) and frontend work for IBM.

My journey as a technologist started with a childhood question: What If you could bring the multimedia richness of video games to literature? What would those experiences feel like, and what would it take to build them?

Years of experimenting later, that question became Artmayu, a studio for interactive, multimedia storytelling, and Scroll Cinema, a tool for making it happen.

If you’d like to bring a story to a screen, I'd love to help you build it.

Services

  • Person contemplating in front of a diagram on a whiteboard with arrows pointing in four directions and labeled 'Branching Paths.'

    Discovery

Have an idea for an interactive experience or story but aren't sure where to start? I'll help you shape it, testing your vision against what the technology can actually do, so you leave with a clear, buildable plan.

  • A video game development interface showing code and assets for a post-apocalyptic game titled 'SHTF: a post-apocalyptic pick your path adventure' with options 'Start,' 'Tutorial,' and 'Credits.'

    App Development

When it's time to build, I turn concepts into finished products, programming your project and publishing to platforms including web, iOS, Android, and desktop. With 12+ years shipping production software, I build work that holds up to real use.

  • Web Development

Beyond interactive storytelling, I build websites and web tools, independently and inside larger teams. I’ve collaborated with developers, designers, writers, and artists, across Automattic, IBM, and small publishers.

  • Workshops

I also teach educational workshops to share my approach and tools to enable creative expression and technological literacy. If interested in learning more or hosting a workshop with your organization, please get in touch.

Selected Work

  • Blurry letter 'R' with the word 'word' overlaying it in black and white.

    Riveted in the Word

    iOS
Built for renowned designer and author Warren Lehrer, this app explores a historian's struggle to regain language after a stroke. I programmed the project and helped with UX and user testing.

  • Illustration of a smiling cartoon bear character with green eyes, wearing a light green shirt and aqua shorts, standing against a blue sky background with clouds.

    Green Our Home

    iOS, Android
A children's app teaching eco-friendly home habits, built for the educational nonprofit Green Rank. I programmed it from their designs and illustrations, and shipped to both iOS and Android.

  • Blurry image of a person standing against a wall

    SHTF

    iOS, Android, Web
A retro, post-apocalyptic interactive fiction app I programmed for art duo Really Large Numbers and publisher Paper Crown Press.

  • WordPress at Automattic

    React, Redux, TypeScript, PHP
As a sponsored contributor to WordPress core, I built the image lightbox and worked on the Block Bindings API. I also developed features for the WordPress.com Reader, including the user profile page and quick editor, in the Calypso codebase.

  • Black and white illustration of a woman in profile, with long hair, looking upward against a dark background.

    IBM Internal Platforms

    React, Drupal, C3, HTML/CSS
As a developer at the agency VSA Partners, I built and maintained front ends for IBM's internal platforms: their company directory, an employee learning platform, and an internal news hub.

  • A cartoon lion with a vibrant mane examines a plush toy with a stitched face in a colorful room with scattered toys.

    Enterprise Ecommerce

    HTML, JavaScript, SASS, PHP
I've built and maintained ecommerce — checkout flows, coupons, and store management — through frontend Magento work at the agency Pixafy and, more recently, have done subscriptions with Stripe on a small WordPress site.

Studio Projects

  • When I Fall Asleep

A webcomic combining my original illustrations and animations, this is the flagship demo of Scroll Cinema. It tells the story of an overwhelmed college student, Alina, and how she finds peace in quiet moments.

  • Black and white illustration of a woman in profile, with long hair, looking upward against a dark background.

    A Modern Ghost

An original multimedia short story exploring love and loss. I directed, programmed, and created artwork for the project. Shortlisted for the New Media Writing Prize.

  • Scroll Cinema

An authoring tool for scroll-driven animation, in early access. Scroll Cinema lets creators build animated zines, motion comics, and webcomics for the web — no code required.

  • Scrollimation Anthology

A publication celebrating scroll-based digital storytelling. I curated the anthology, designed it, and drew the cover.

  • A cartoon lion with a vibrant mane examines a plush toy with a stitched face in a colorful room with scattered toys.

    AltSalt.com

A community platform I built for independent voices in digital publishing. Focusing on electronic literature and other alternative formats, it is currently in early access.

  • Cartoon laboratory with futuristic machines, green glowing tubes, and a large central device with tentacles and a swirling light. The scene includes a Roomba-like robot cleaner and a dialogue box saying, "I've been waiting for you, GWR 3000."

    Alternative Worlds

AltSalt's first community project: Two collections of work from more than twenty creators, and the start of an ongoing home for independent digital storytelling.

Collaborations and Game Jams

Team prototypes built under time pressure

Stitch Me

I wrote the business logic for this game about repairing stuffed animals. Nominated for Best Use of Theme at the NYU Global Game Jam.

Rooombra to the Rescue

I wrote the gameplay logic for this game about a vacuum cleaner saving the world. Nominated for Best Use of Theme at the NYU Global Game Jam.

What is “Electronic Literature”?

Much of my own work lives in a space called electronic literature — writing built for screens, where text, image, sound, and interaction work together. It invites readers not just to read, but to engage, navigate, and experience. It's the tradition my studio projects come from and, within the realm of electronic literature, I take the following approach.

Widely Accessible

I prioritize mobile devices and computers, targeting touch, mouse, and keyboard input over niche hardware, so works can reach the widest possible audience.

Fully Multimedia

Text, audio, animation, illustration, video, interactivity; I combine media so the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Story-Focused

Interactivity should serve the story, not the vice-versa. I favor simple interactions that, layered together, open up a wide range of expression.
